Brain Injury Inpatient Unit

Royal Rehab’s Brain Injury services are offer highly specialised traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation. 

Individually tailored NDIS rehabilitation programs are delivered through a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals including rehabilitation doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. Rehabilitation takes place in our purpose-built facility and can incorporate an array of on-site resources such as gymnasium, hydrotherapy pool, productive garden and adaptive exercise equipment. All patient rooms are single rooms with individual ensuite bathrooms. There is also a shared treatment area, accessible courtyard and an outdoor recreation area which can be used for therapy and family visitors. Royal Rehab is a purpose-built facility, located on exceptional grounds with lots of recreational and nature spaces to assist with recovery.

Preparing for your stay

Your referring hospital will arrange your admission with Royal Rehab. They will also provide details of your injury including all relevant information about medications, investigations (scans and reports) and any follow up appointments. Please bring any required toiletries for your stay, including toothbrush/paste, denture cleaner (if applicable), comb, brush, shampoo and body wash. If you use a visual aid such as reading glasses, please ensure you pack all the types you need such as multifocal, bifocal or a specific pair of reading glasses. If you use hearing aids be sure to pack spare batteries. Patients are encouraged to wear their own clothing, and suitable footwear during their admission at Royal Rehab. Clothing should enable as much independence as possible, whilst maintaining dignity and privacy. As an example, button up shirts and draw string pants may be easier for some to manage than zippers. Clothing that is sized slightly larger than usual may also assist with building independence. Shoes should be well fitting and fully enclosed, thongs and slippers are examples of footwear that is not appropriate. Carers and family are encouraged to bring in photos to personalise your room environment. Story boards and memorabilia can be a great aid to cognitive rehabilitation.

Whilst every care is taken, Royal Rehab are unable to take responsibility for your personal belongings while you are a patient. Please do not bring large sums of cash, or valuable items with you.

During your stay

The services of our Brain Injury Unit are designed to enrich lives by providing personalised support with the aim being to empower our clients with the skills and confidence to live life as independently as possible.

At Royal Rehab we understand that people are all individuals. We respect the right of each person to set their own goals and we appreciate that everyone’s circumstances are different.

Our team members will work with you to assess your current level of function, assist you in establishing clear rehab goals and regularly assess your progress. They will then use this information to provide you with a weekly timetable. Your timetable will also include details of any scheduled follow up appointments or investigations requested by your team.

Your rehabilitation journey will include one-on-one periods with individual therapists. Where appropriate you will also participate in group therapy sessions to build on your individual progress.

While you are a patient at Royal Rehab you will be allocated a social worker/case manager to assist you. They will be your main point of contact for administrative and discharge planning.

You will be allocated a main contact therapist from each allied health discipline.

During your admission we will provide informed advice and guidance in relation to adjustment to any disability which may remain after your rehabilitation program is complete.

Within the Brain Injury Unit is purpose-built transitional accommodation set up to replicate a real-life shared living situation. Patients share a common kitchen facility and are encouraged to live as independently as possible and learn life skills necessary to assist them with their transition back home.

Our focus is on assisting you to gain as much function and independence as possible with the aim of maximising your quality of life.

 Nutritious, balanced meals are planned and prepared on-site for all clients at Royal Rehab. A large choice of food is on offer to accommodate individual preferences, religious and allergy requirements.

Breakfast: 8:00 am
Lunch: 12:30 pm
Dinner: 5:30 pm

There is a washer and dryer available for personal use whilst on the ward.

Televisions are fitted in individual patient rooms and communal lounge areas for the comfort of all users. Free WIFI is available for our clients. Please ask a member of your treating team for login/password details.

 Research shows that there are no safe levels of smoking. Smoking is only permitted on Royal Rehab grounds in the designated smoking area at the rear of the main building near the sports courts on Recreational Circle.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere else on our campus including in any of our vehicles, buildings and grounds apart from the designated area. Your treating team can arrange access to suitable nicotine replacement therapy for the duration of your stay.

The health and wellbeing of our clients, staff members and the wider community is our top priority. We encourage visitation of friends and loved ones.

Royal Rehab Ryde continues to monitor and take precautionary measures to strictly follow the guidelines of relevant authorities including the NSW Ministry of Health regarding COVID-19 and other acute respiratory illnesses.

Inpatient Visiting Hours:12:00pm till 8:00pm daily.

Visitors are encouraged to:

  • Regularly use hand sanitiser which is available throughout our hospital
  • During periods of high community transmission, comply with COVID-19 testing requirements at the time of your visit

Visitors showing any flu-like signs or symptoms are requested to postpone their visit, and not to enter the hospital.

Planning for your discharge starts from the time of your admission. You and your family will be actively involved in the process. Your ongoing needs will be identified and arrangements will be made with community support services, home modification services and therapists as appropriate, prior to your discharge from Royal Rehab.

How long you stay at Royal Rehab will depend on several factors, including your medical condition and your progress in meeting your rehabilitation goals.  On admission your team will advise an estimate of your provisional discharge date. However, this date may vary depending on your changing needs, and the rate at which you progress through your program.
